The Bane of Self-Righteousness

Dear One,

I am writing to remind you of things you already know. Self-righteousness breeds suffering and has painful consequences in relationships. It shows up as, “I am right, and you are wrong,” an unwillingness to respect other viewpoints, an attitude of blame, and a tense armoring in the body.

Three practices can help you release toxic indignation:

  1. Acknowledge your own pain and tend to the needs of your heart through healthy self-soothing and introspection.

  2. Recognize your own reactivity and take a time out in order to make space for the energy to diffuse.

  3. Widen your perspective to appreciate the humanity in each person, the fact that everyone is intimately connected and interdependent, and how unskillful behavior is most often a result of insecurity — a state of mind to which no one is immune.

These practices do not negate the need for healthy boundaries, but they do contribute to the lessening of your own suffering and its negative impact on your relationships.

Remember, this moment is an opportunity to connect to Love and so to live into the fullness of who you are.

As always, do what best awakens you to Love,

Your Inner Wisdom
