Poems From The Porch

Tuning In

A blue jay wanted attention this morning,

crying out loudly from a crepe myrtle branch,

then hopping onto the tin roof of the porch.

I called out in reply,

but I don’t think he heard or understood me.

He flew off again

in search of someone else who would listen.

He needs to be heard.

Are his friends tuning him out

or does he need to stop and attend tenderly to himself?

I am doing that this morning here on the porch;

allowing my heart to be heard and nurtured

by the One Who cares for me dearly,

smiling to myself

and to the day

and setting an intention to be a peaceful presence for good in the world

and a hospitable place

for myself.
